Yes it is possible!
It's an advantage for your kitten to learn to come when called as it improves the bond between you and your kitten and stimulates the kitten's mind to learn. If your kitten is to be an outdoor pet, you'll only have to call your kitten's name and a purring presence will soon appear at your feet. If your kitten ever gets lost, being able to respond to the sound of its name could make all the difference.
Firstly, teach your kitten its name by repeating it while playing with, or patting, your kitten. Use your kitten's name often and always when something positive is happening. With a treat or toy in your hand, call your kitten's name and reward your kitten the moment it gives you its full attention. Tasty treats used as rewards work wonders!
Once the name has stuck, you are ready to teach your kitten to come when called. One of the best moments to teach this command is at mealtimes. Be sure the kitten is nearby and can see you preparing its food. As soon as the meal is ready, call your kitten's name and the word "come" in an upbeat voice. The moment your kitten comes to you reward it with the meal. Do this consistently with every meal and once your kitten has made the connection between being called and dinner, then it's time for the next step.
A few minutes before mealtime your kitten will be expecting something to eat. Instead of using the meal as a reward, use some treats and move to a different area of the house. Now call your kitten and when it appears immediately give plenty of praise and treats. You can then try this at different times of the day, always praising and rewarding the behaviours you want to encourage. You can even turn this into a "hide and seek" game, and your kitten will have fun while learning (and so might you!).
A cat of any age can learn to come when called, but a kitten makes the best student and there's no time like the present to teach this practical command.
