Grooming is very important for your kitten and cat. Not only is it an ideal opportunity for you to check for fleas or hidden wounds, it is also a great chance for the two of you to spend some quality time together.

For the best success in grooming your cat, start a regular routine early in its life. Once a week is usually ideal, but if you have a long-haired breed such as a Persian or Birman you will need to groom every day to prevent matting.

Brushing your kitten not only removes loose fur, that can be swallowed and turn to furballs, but also improves circulation and coat condition. Furballs are formed in the cat's stomach from swallowing the hair it picks up with its tongue when grooming itself. These hairballs can sometimes cause a blockage in your kitten's stomach.

The key to establishing a good grooming routine is patience! Remember, this is a relatively new experience for your kitten (and possibly for you too!) so take plenty of time to discover what your kitten likes and where its sensitive areas are. Be careful of its delicate ears and the stomach area.
